About this Episode

What if singing was about expression, not perfection?

In this episode, Jeremy de Tolly sits down with Dr. Shannon Coates to explore the evolving world of vocal pedagogy and what it truly means to teach singing in a healthy, inclusive, and empowering way. Together they unpack the difference between voice science and voice teaching, the impact of cultural bias in traditional training, and why student-led, trauma-informed approaches are reshaping the future of singing.

From neurodiversity-affirming teaching to the healing power of collective singing, this conversation challenges long-held beliefs about who gets to sing — and how we can create safer, more human-centered spaces for voice and expression.

Dr. Shannon Coates is a voice pedagogy specialist, singer, and educator who focuses on the science and practice of teaching singing. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Vocal Performance specializing in Voice Pedagogy from the University of Toronto. Her work sits at the intersection of Vocal science, teaching methodology (pedagogy) and practical training for voice teachers. Shannon’s mission is to translate academic voice research into practical tools for independent singing teachers.
